Metal-on-Metal hip replacements (including DePuy's ASR model) are designed with a metal ball that inserts into a metal socket. This metal-on-metal design results in the release of metal particles, including cobalt and chromium, which can be found in the soft tissue around the joint; causes loosening of the device; and may disrupt the integrity of the bone into which the device is implanted.
After years of physicians and research scientists reporting numerous adverse events including metallic debris in patients, early failure of the devices, and increased incidences of revision surgeries to replace the defective device, DePuy finally recalled its ASR Hip System in August 2010. While other products with a similar design remain on the market, patients are experiencing similar symptoms.
